National Library Week 2019

National Library Week 2019 Huntington Learning Center is pleased to join schools, teachers, librarians and community members in celebrating National Library Week, an observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA). This annual event, held April 7 to 13, 2019, also incorporates daily celebrations to honor some of the most important library workers and announces the release of important publications: State of Americas Libraries Report release, which includes the Top 10 Frequently Challenged Books of 2018 (Monday) National Library Workers Day (Tuesday) - Recognizes staff, users, administrators and friends of libraries National Bookmobile Day (Wednesday) - Honors the professionals that make bookmobile outreach possible in their communities Take Action for Libraries Day (Thursday) A national library advocacy effort For 2019, the ALA has chosen a theme of Libraries = Strong Communities. The Honorary Chair of 2019 National Library Week is Melinda Gates, who is co-chair of the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation. She has invested more than $1 billion through her foundations Global Libraries initiative to enhance the power of libraries to promote literacy and improve lives. Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center says that all types of libraries (school, public, academic and special) are important in society, adding that libraries can transform communities. At Huntington, we frequently suggest that parents and children make library visits a regular part of their lives, she says. Libraries are gathering places that offer citizens many resources to learn and better themselves. Of course, libraries also help parents lay the foundation for their childrens lifelong literacy and appreciation of books. National Library Week is an important celebration to all of us at Huntington. We encourage our students and their families to support our nations libraries this week and always. National Library Week was founded in 1958. In the mid-1950s, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed the National Book Committee, which aimed to encourage people to read in their leisure time. That committee developed a plan for National Library Week, which promoted the support and use of libraries around the country. While libraries are great places to check out books, magazines and other reading material, Huntington reminds families of the many other uses of libraries: As a meetup spot for students working on group projects or studying For computer access To participate in leisure activities (such as a cultural organization or meditation class) To access media (movies, music, audiobooks, etc.) To take free or low-cost classes on a wide range of topics, such as computer use, completing taxes and creative writing As a social gathering space For clubs, reading groups and other organizations As a resource for gathering information on starting a business For meeting spaces To learn more about National Library Week and this years theme, visit www.ala.org/nlw. Its just an interesting coincidence that the words sound similar, but its a coincidence, at least etymologically.Furthermore,  chào  t?m bi?t, unlike ciao, is a formal way to say goodbye and is one of those goodbyes that tends to carry a sense of finality.  Chào is used as a greeting, but only when following it with a proper term of address, which is covered at the beginning of the video below if you want to rewind it.In other words, as an exception to what we talked about above in terms of the versatility of ciao, chào and ciao,  these are not words that you want to get mixed up or throw around casually in a Vietnamese language context. So, how do you say goodbye in a less formal way in Vietnamese? You can simply s ay bye bye.Hello Goodbye (Love Vietnamese Love Saigon)Learning goodbye in many languages isnt just a good way to prepare yourself for encounters in those languages but to see the similarities and differences between them.Have fun with the videos in this post, and goodbye til next time!Elisabeth Cook is a freelance writer who you can find on Twitter (@CooksChicken), trying to avoid being told shes at an Arbys.

Encouraging teenagers to study an impossible task

Encouraging teenagers to study â€" an impossible task Education can often be the last thing on a teenager's mind, particularly when there is plethora of computer games, social networking sites and TV channels competing for their attention. Encouraging a child to study can be the hardest challenge a parent or private tutor will face, particularly during the school holidays when teenagers have put exam revision behind them and are surrounded by a seemingly endless array of distractions. There are a number of tried and tested methods you can turn to though, which will not only encourage study, but will also sow the seeds for self-discipline later in life: Encourage students to allocate certain times in the day dedicated to studying. Sometimes studying can seem like a chore - especially for teenagers eager to see their mates - but unless you instill into them the importance of putting aside an hour each day that is used only for GCSE or A-level revision, you will be fighting a losing battle. Good time management skills are essential for making grades and passing exams, so really emphasize to your child that this 'study time' is just as an essential part of their day as brushing their teeth or eating their meals. Do not force your child into studying. The key word here is encouragement. If they have one last level to beat on their Xbox, then let them play. However, only do so with the full understanding that they will need to finish their school work afterwards. You could even turn the tables and use this as a form of reward for working hard. (Though I recommend stopping short of blatant bribery!) Show a keen interest in your child's social life. A good social life is just as important for your child's development as their school work. The more interest you show them in the life they lead with their friends, the more open they will be to listening to you when it comes to homework and exam revision. These are just three of many possible ways to encourage teenage children to build study time into their day-to-day lives, but the list is by no means exhaustive. Do you have any particular methods you use to encourage GCSE or A-level study? Please leave a comment to share your tips with the rest of our parent community.

Other major benefits to acquiring a new language are that you can travel to countries which speak this language much more easily and comfortably. you can make new friendships with people who you may never have had the chance to get close to due to a language barrier and it also makes you smarter, according to experts. It makes sense, for if you know a Latin language then you will find it easier to remember the periodic table (i.e. Lead in French is Plomb and the chemical symbol for lead is Pb, Iron is Fer (F) and Gold is Or (Au) and so on...). Meanwhile, having a brand new language under your belt like Hindi could potentially unlock so much more.So if you’re interested in learning more about another language for business purposes, there are a few key contenders in mind â€" w hether that’s:Mandarin;German; orSpanish. However, one often overlooked language that can be a great advantage in the business arena is Hindi. One of the official languages of India, Hindi is the fourth most-spoken language in the world, and so naturally, is spoken by many in India. India is considered to be the sixth-largest economy in the world, and may even surpass the UK to become the fifth-largest by the end of this year. So if you’re looking to get your foot in a door of a major corporation, it ma y be worth seeing whether they have existing links with India, or are in fact an Indian business. If they do have those links, then chances are that depending on the role you apply for, your Hindi language skills could put you in a favourable light.Additionally, once you’ve mastered Hindi then you’ll also have an easy time learning Urdu â€" Pakistan’s national language â€" as they are widely considered to be the same language to a degree, but are simply written in different scripts. While this means that, as a Hindi speaker, you would not be able to write in Urdu, you should still be able to communicate proficiently with an Urdu speaker, even if you’re speaking Hindi to them.In business, having two extra languages to your name can really expand the reach of the number of people you can communicate with, which is always a bonus. The Hindi language can be great for business. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, freeGraphicToday, Pixabay)Stay Ahead Of The CompetitionWhat’s more, the fact is that Hindi is often not taught as a second language in schools in the west, as often different languages such as French, German, Spanish, or even Mandarin are made more widely available to students. As a result, if you do decide to learn Hindi for work purposes, then you could have a head start on a number of people who simply would not have thought to learn Hindi for their career, despite its growing importance. How To Learn Hindi EffectivelyWhether you’re a beginner or fluent, it’s never too late to start learning and improving your comprehension of Hindi. As with any language, it’s crucial that you develop four key skills during your language journey:Listening skills;Reading skills;Writing skills; andSpeaking skills.Often, reading and listening skills will develop the quickest.
